Welcome to the Daily Gritt, where I talk a load of rubbish about video game news.
Google goes “good guy” on in-app purchaces and Pay-to-Win.
I’ve always had quite a bit of respect for Google. Yes, they don’t do the best at design and their YouTube team are utter poop but overall they are good. So when I heard about this I was glad to support them.
So here’s the thing, In App Purchases can sometimes lead to accidental purchases and if you get addicted to a game, it might have the same effects on a bank account as gambling. Plus, most of the in-app purchaces games are pay to win money grabs. What has Google done? They are no longer classing apps that offer in-app purchaces as ‘Free’. The reason for this is that the EU (European Union) has developed guidelines that would prevent “direct exhortation to children”. This basically means to protect children from being urged to buy stuff. They did this because parents complained about in-app purchases.
Quotes? QUOTES! EU Commissioner for Consumer Policy Neven Mimica said: "This is the very first enforcement action of its kind in which the European Commission and national authorities joined forces. I am happy to see that it is delivering tangible results. This is significant for consumers, in particular, children must be better protected when playing online.” Cheers to you, Google.
Bungie says cross-platform multiplayer in Destiny is a no because it’s unfair!
Cross-platform multiplayer wasn’t expected in Destiny, and we are not getting it. Cross-platform multiplayer is a rare thing in the gaming world because it’s so hard to connect the two platforms. Hardly any games have it! The highly anticipated Destiny won’t be one to have cross-platform multiplayer as expected but Bungie is justifing it in an unusual way.
Bungie says its not because of the technical hurdle the height of Mt. Everest, it’s because they care about the fairness of the game.
"I’ll speak for the hypothetical player," Bungie engineer Roger Wolfson told Digital Trends when asked why cross-platform play wasn’t included. “I have a disadvantage sniping across the map because [my opponent with a next-gen console] is only two pixels on my screen and I’m four pixels on his. You see that in the world of PC gaming, where people are always racing to the best video card to give themselves the advantage.”
It’s not all gibon-talking. Bungie has a point and bravo for the great explaination but they could of just used the same reason as everyone else, it’s too hard. Yet again, Bungie want to think of themselves better then everyone else, or do they? I have no freaking idea.
